Wearable Fall 2014 Trends – Trend Thursday

Fall is fast approaching! To me there is no season as naturally glamorous as fall. I love the cooler weather, moodier hues, and layers that embody the season. It also helps that my birthday happens on the most “autumn-y” of holidays (this year), Thanksgiving! (But seriously, how can you not like Thanksgiving? Food, Family, Football and of course, Black Friday)

Here is your head to toe guide for all things autumnal.

Colors: Think neutrals of all kinds with a rich jewel tone. Imagine a grey and white outfit with a pop of cobalt and emerald. Or an amethyst dress with stonewashed grey accessories.

Embellishments: Leather panels on tops and bottoms scream edgy. I love seeing unexpected details of mesh, leather, or stonework on casual pieces. Sweaters with elbow patches? Sweatshirts with embellished shoulders? Leather paneled skirts? Yes please!

Fabric: Sheer fabrics with large prints, knitwear of all kinds, and anything that resembles “boyfriend”-wear is still trending. I love a sheer long-sleeve maxi with a thigh length split for the season (rock it with sheer tights while it’s still early in the season and dry). For those that are hesitant about transitioning or still in summer body baring mode, there will be plenty of pieces that have mesh panels to satisfy your need to show some skin while still being seasonally relevant.

Print: Think bold. Geometric and vivid retro prints will be hot. Instead of wearing traditional checks and plaids that are red or blue based, try windowpane check in neutral shades (for example: whites, camels, blacks, navys, and greys), for a clean modern look. When it comes to prints this season, bigger is better (with balance).

Another trend is a lot of globally influenced fabrics to be seen have rich jewel tones. Think Nordic prints and western inspired textiles. The common colorful florals of summer and spring fade out and are replaced by their cooler neutral siblings in black and white.

Silhouette: Think the strong but feminine styles of the 60s and 70s. updated. A-lines and miniskirts will be all over the racks, as well as more androgynous pieces. Wide legged and loose trousers (like jogger pants), are fashionably appropriate for work wear since skirts will be a rarity. Pair a skinny jean and fitted tee with a large overcoat. Exaggerated proportions can look phenomenal when done correctly, and not like an oversized trash bag.

Hair: Add rich tones to hair. Burgundy, copper, caramels, and auburns replace cooler blonde and brunette shades.

Makeup: For the transitional months, a flush of berry anywhere on the face is flattering. Amp up warm eyes with rich golds, coppers, and bronzes to flatter your eyes. If you’re cooler toned, try a pewter or taupe tone to bring some warmth to your eyes while still keeping it in your shade family (silver would be too cool for this season).

Nails: Plums, berries, wines, gold, pewter, anything rich or metallic. Jewel tones are always popular this time of year and a deep orchid purple keeps the color of the year seasonal.

Next week, I’ll be highlighting Fall accessories!

What are you looking forward to wearing this Fall?

Be fearless,
